Fraternity Suspended After Harassing Neighbor, Stated ‘They Pay Rent
And Can Do What They Want’ [Video]
Afraternity in Texas has been placed on an indefinite suspension after evidence was presented to the university, proving the residents were responsible for elevated noise, harassment, and property damage to a neighboring house.
Students in the fraternity made a habit of terrorizing the neighbor in various ways. As a result, the neighbors installed security cameras, hoping to catch the students in the act. Video showed the students throwing items into the neighbors yard, writing messages in the snow, and more. The fraternity members may have thought it was all fun and games, but the university thought otherwise, resulting in the indefinite suspension.
Students belonging to the Sigma Chi fraternity at the Southern Methodist University in Texas have been informed by the national chapter of Sigma Chi that the SMU chapter has been suspended indefinitely as a result of their lack of civility toward a neighboring home. The fraternity spent months harassing the neighbors, on a daily basis, for a reason that has not yet been revealed.
According toGood Morning America, the frat members focused their rude behavior on Tim O’Connell’s home. His house was constantly the target of loud noise from the fraternity, with students urinating on his lawn and using freshly fallen snow to share their disdain for him by writing obscenities. Video even caught the students throwing raw meat into his yard.
O’Connell approached the fraternity, asking them to stop, but he was met with a lack of respect for his space, as one member stated that they could do whatever they want.
"They told me they pay rent and they can do whatever they want."
O’Connell installed the cameras around his home, hoping to catch the fraternity members in the act or deter them from doing any more damage. When the disrespectful behavior continued, O’Connell presented the video to the college, who in turn reported the behavior to the Sigma Chi National chapter. The national chapter responded that they do not condone the behavior, according to ABC News.
"We do not condone or endorse the actions we have been made aware of."
Shortly after, the national chapter revoked the fraternity of its membership and suspended the SMU chapter indefinitely.
Representatives from Southern Methodist University are investigating the incidents and questioning other neighbors to determine if they were also victims of the immature behaviors. At this time, none of the other neighbors have shared their experiences with the public.

Dolores Park trash far exceeds Golden Gate Park’s
By Matier & Ross

Hundreds of people flocked to Dolores Park in San Francisco, Calif. Sunday, February 15, 2015 to enjoy the rare, warm February weather.
IMAGE 1 OF 2
Garbage is a big problem at San Francisco's Dolores Park, costing the Recreation and Parks Department $400,000 a year in clean up costs.
Thanks to a combination of bad behavior, lax policing and politics, San Francisco is spending $400,000 a year just to pick up the picnic and party trash left behind by thousands of people who gather at Dolores Park every weekend.
Park workers spend hours cleaning up empty beer, wine and Champagne bottles, as well as what’s left of the rum-filled coconuts sold by one enterprising vendor — all in a park where littering and drinking are supposedly against the law.
Enforcement of those laws, however, does not appear to extend to the hipster hangout known as "Dolores Beach," in part because the park system has only two rangers to patrol the city’s more than 220 parks — but also because the city does not want to put a damper on the fun.
"No one wants to begrudge anyone from enjoying a six-pack or a picnic," said Supervisor Scott Wiener, whose district includes the park. "People need to do what their parents told them to do — pick up after themselves."
But they don’t, and whenever the temperature climbs over 65 degrees on a Saturday, a festival-size crowd of 7,000 to 10,000 descends on the park — but without any of the festival requirements.
The result is 14,921 cubic yards of garbage a year — 75 times as much trash as is left at the comparably sized Alamo Square park across town.
In fact, take away the California Academy of Sciences, Botanical Garden, Kezar Stadium and de Young Museum, and 1,027-acre Golden Gate Park generates just one-sixth the amount of trash per year as 14-acre Dolores Park, according to Recreation and Park Department officials.
What’s more, Rec and Park spokeswoman Sarah Ballard said, "there is a sense of lawlessness in Dolores Park, and it doesn’t stop once a majority of the crowd goes home."
Police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza, who spent eight years working in the Mission, said the department simply doesn’t have the resources to patrol the park routinely.
"If you’ve worked in the Mission, you know that call after call is for a violent crime — a robbery in progress, a burglary or a domestic violence call," Esparza said. "The priority of the department is to respond to violent crimes in progress."
Esparza says officers do try to respond to "low priority’’ park complaints. But often, by the time they arrive, the caller has disappeared or the situation has dissipated.
Esparza said the department does not keep track of citations for public drinking and littering, but he acknowledged that few — if any — were ever issued in Dolores Park while he was working the beat. Typically, he said, if he caught someone drinking alcohol, he would ask the person to pour it out or be cited.
And from what we’re told, Rec and Park doesn’t do much to enforce the rules, either.
Rec and Park staffers believe the city’s anything-goes attitude at Dolores Park has led to a spate of lawlessness, including Thursday night’s playground-trashing and the incident involving two teens who allegedly hot-wired a construction vehicle and went on a doughnut-spinning joyride on newly laid sod.
Supervisor Wiener, however, says the answer is not a crackdown — which critics call a "war on fun." Wiener wants more rangers on hand to help educate the park crowd to clean up, and to stop urinating and throwing up outside park neighbors’ homes.
Meanwhile, the party goes on.
To Bibi or not to Bibi:Bay Area Democratic Reps. Barbara Lee (Oakland), Mike Thompson (St. Helena), Zoe Lofgren (San Jose) and Jerry McNerney (Stockton) boycotted Israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu's speech to a joint meeting of Congress on Tuesday, while Democratic leaderNancy Pelosi of San Francisco attended.
Newly elected Democratic Rep. Mark DeSaulnier of Concord wasn’t sure what to do. Attending the speech could be considered a slight to President Obama, while boycotting it could offend his Jewish constituents.
"And on this issue, I think the president’s course of action with Iran is right, at least compared to the alternative," DeSaulnier said. "I went back and forth all morning."
DeSaulnier ultimately decided he would follow Pelosi’s example. But by the time he reached the House floor, every seat was taken — including his. So he wound up watching Netanyahu on TV in the House cloakroom, just off of the floor, with the rest of the spillover crowd.
"I didn’t agree with everything he said, but he said it well," DeSaulnier said. "The guy is very good at what he does."
Off pitch:The other day we told you that the business-boosting Bay Area Council — with the blessing of Mayor Libby Schaaf — had sent George Lucas an invitation to build his much-maligned cultural arts museum in Oakland.
The group reminded the "Star Wars" creator that "urban legend suggests that you drew inspiration from (Oakland’s) towering maritime container cranes for the giant ... Snow Walkers that appeared in 'The Empire Strikes Back.’"
Not a smart move.
The Chronicle’s Peter Hartlaub interviewed Lucas several years back, and "the one time he appeared angry at me was at the end, when I asked about the port cranes and the AT-ATs," a.k.a. Snow Walkers.
"He strongly denied the connection, and seemed like he was sick of the subject," Hartlaub said.

Greek community improving action regarding alcohol, sexual assault
BYDANIEL SAEDI | SPECIAL TO THE DAILY CAL
LAST UPDATED FEBRUARY 12, 2015
I’d like to thank Michelle Endo for writingan opinion piece a few weeks ago calling for significant changes in the Greek community. I’m writing because as a leader in the Greek community, I hear your complaints. I’ll be the first to admit that we have not historically had the most perfect behavior — in fact, some might say we’ve been far from it — but that does not mean we cannot change and coexist with the greater UC Berkeley community. I can’t speak for the specific incident referenced in the previous article, as it occurred at an unaffiliated group, but there is no question that the events that transpired this past semester have signaled that we cannot continue down the same path. The time for change has come, and I believe that the actions we have proactively taken as a community and the gradual shift in our culture have shown that this is not a PR stunt, but rather a movement toward responsibility and safety that we are honestly invested in.
Many organizations in the Greek community have already taken multilateral, voluntary steps to ensure that we will be part of a solution to, and no longer propagators of, alcohol abuse. The misuse of alcohol is not exclusive to the Greek system. It has been ingrained in the prototypical college experience, and it’s a staple of many other clubs and organizations on campus. This, however, does not mean that we cannot try to create a safer environment for the enjoyment of alcohol. In November, chapter presidents of the Interfraternity Council, or IFC, enacted a voluntary ban on hard alcohol at all events until the end of recruitment in January. During that time, we saw Greek alcohol-related transports plummet to new lows. In that span of nearly two months, there were fewer than five alcohol transports attributed to Greek events. *This shows that chapters not only followed these self-imposed regulations but also practiced a higher level of risk management that I see continuing into the far future. In recognition of these results, on Wednesday, the IFC presidents took a momentous step and voluntarily extended that ban until the end of the semester. These policies weren’t prompted by the university or any outside force. Rather, these were voluntary and proactive steps that we have taken that highlight our commitment to maintaining a safe environment for our members and for members of the UC Berkeley community who attend our events.
I am upset and disappointed that Michelle believes members of the Greek community view sexual assault as a joke. The fraternity men and sorority women of this Greek system were outraged and disgusted at the deplorable increase in the reports of these heinous acts in our community this past semester. I want to reiterate that IFC and the other Greek councils maintain a zero-tolerance policy for sexual assault and violence and that we will not stand for allowing anyone found guilty of such offenses to remain in our community. As members of value-based institutions, we view it as our duty to take action to rid our community of these transgressions and moral wrongs. IFC already has passed two constitutional amendments mandating consent workshops and bystander training for all members with strict attendance requirements. IFC has partnered with GenEq, the LEAD Center, Greeks Against Sexual Assault and other organizations to expand the consent and sexual assault education programming for our members. I have the utmost confidence that these workshops and programs will be taken seriously given the energy and passion for change that is already permeating the Greek system. Michelle, you may see on the outside that only a few Greeks are participating in these important dialogues, but I witnessed hundreds of us at the Cal Greeks Forum on Sexual Assault actively engaging in conversation aimed at reforming the system. I can feel the cultural shift that I’m proud to be a part of: I’ve heard Greeks at parties, drinking coffee or even walking around campus talking about the actions they could take and the habits and views they could change to help curb sexual violence. These types of attitudinal and psychological changes will take time to mature, but they signify the seriousness of our approach and our genuine mission to prevent sexual assault in our community.
I realize that the Greek system and its historical attitudes may be culpable in creating a culture that contributed to the ongoing problem of alcohol abuse and sexual violence. The current members of the Cal Greeks community, however, cannot change the past. We can only institute progressive steps that may ensure that we are part of a long-term cultural solution to these problems. My hope is that this dialogue will continue and that we will continue to make a comprehensive and lasting impact on the community with regards to these issues. I encourage anyone who has any feedback, suggestions or questions about our efforts or the Greek community in general to continue this conversation by contacting me.

now witnessed and video taped hard liquor being carried into several
frats this semester (2015) just prior to parties. Pictures sent to UC.
Nothing was done. UC's student code of conduct states, "no hard liquor
is to be served at frats"
So, now the IFC states no hard liquor will be served at frat parties, voluntarily. This is a code of conduct rule stating no hard liquor is to be served at all. Am I missing something like comprehension? I guess reading and comprehension is not required at CAL. What part of no hard alcohol allowed at frats do you not understand. It is not voluntary. Additionally many of these frats are in violation of fire codes and by not registering the party, no fire inspections occur. I have reported many fire code violations by these frats to the City and Fire dept. Again nothing has been done. These fire code violations go back many years, yet the City and UC just ignores student safety.

school graduation, I have witnessed untold pain, suffering and death.
Many times violent and sudden. From my time in the navy to my many
years on one of the busiest ambulances in the Midwest and finally as
an emergency room nurse. I never got used to the emotional toll of
seeing a young life taken, unnecessarily. And the emotional toll the
loved ones family had to endure. That is why I am so angry about the
direction our colleges and police departments have taken in this
country. The direction of willful blindness to the suffering that
occurs because of their negligence. Since we filed our lawsuit,
Berkeley has experienced many critical injuries and deaths to students
near campus, not to mention many sexual assaults. Most of the deaths
and injuries were preventable and could have been avoided if only the
people in authority had done their jobs and followed and enforced the
laws. I am ashamed to say, however, that this willful blindness has
become endemic to those in authority at American colleges. Money and
reputation has now superseded a life. What a travesty this blindness

takes a profoundly different view.
|People are wondering why we filed a
lawsuit against all UC Berkeley Fraternities.
After living in Berkeley for over 22 years, we have learned and witnessed that the mentality at many of Berkeley's frats are similar to a game found at Chucky Cheese called "whack a mole". Every time one fraternity got into trouble, another one would step up to the plate and become the next source of problems. After many complaints to UC, the City of Berkeley, local and national chapters about this behavior at Cal, nothing was ever done to help us. We witnessed, deaths, serious injuries to students, death threats directed toward us, burglaries, vandalism, racial assaults, and derogatory comments about gays, non-whites and women coming from many, if not all of Cal fraternities. We witnessed one frat (Zetas) break into a sorority and steal 10's of thousands of dollars in furniture. (Nothing was ever done). We have witnessed this same frat, break into and terrorize female students at a sorority; some were so traumatized from the experience they called home to be picked up and later dropped out of Cal. Again nothing was done. After supplying video recordings to the sorority showing this frat as the perpetrator to the vandalism, the sorority, was reimbursed for most of the damage by the frat's alumni. For our help in the recovery of the stolen material, we received not one thank you from the sorority (Kappa Alpha Theta). But we did have our house broken into by members of area frats in retaliation for the help given. The only frat boy I was able to catch belonged to the fraternity (Theta Delta Chi) which is located over a block away from our home. These frat boys urinated and vomited on our furniture and rugs and scared and scarred a feral cat we had just taken in. They violently kicked in our back door, broke a rear window, some furniture and stole many security tapes and equipment. One year later, the sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta called again about damage to their house and if we had any evidence. We did and again it showed the Zeta's as being responsible for the damage. I offered to provide video of the vandalism but required the sorority call and file a complaint against the Zeta's. The sorority refused and the video was not given to them. There is a code of conduct in the Greek system. This code of conduct is not the one UC asks the Greek system to sign, which they have all refused to do. However, their behavior follows a code of conduct similar to the ones in prisons. Keep your mouth shut and say nothing to the authorities. I have phone recordings asking for my help and the Theta's mentioning previous vandalism by this frat. Robert Reich just wrote an article about Wall Street and what a moral crisis we have in this country. He used a quote that exemplifies the reason for going after all Cal frats and addressing the decay in leadership and oversight at these institutions. This quote is taken from James Q Wilson. A broken window left unattended signals that no one cares if windows are broken. It becomes an ongoing invitation to throw more stones at more windows, ultimately undermining the moral standards of the entire community. I could not have said it better.
|ON MANY OF THE BLOG SITES, MANY CAL FRAT MEMBERS HAVE BEEN VERY CRITICAL. (EXPECTED) OF ABC 20/20'S INTERVIEW. THE FRATS HAVE STATED THEY HAVE MULTIPLE SAFE GUARDS IN PLACE TO PREVENT TRAGEDY. example of how fraternities or anyone associated with fraternities
change and manipulate a story to fit THEIR agenda. We can set the
records straight on several points. There is plenty of evidence
supporting our position and claims, while Totalfratmove cannot provide
any supporting evidence. There are plenty of publicly available
documents showing our home has been broken into, many times, the last
time by a member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity along with 3
others. I know because I caught one. Then the time members of a
fraternity screamed they were selling crack. Another time, a
fraternity made several death threats against our neighbors and us in
public and recorded. I have recorded fraternity boys telling a
Berkeley police officer to go **CK HERSELF. Not once did Berkeley
police do anything. Therefore, as typical with many things regarding
fraternity conduct, TOTALFRATMOVES decides to fabricate lies, so they
can feel self-righteous. This blog (TOTALFRATMOVES) continues to
perpetuate the lies that fraternities are being vilified for no
Multiple sexual assaults and 2 recent deaths were never mentioned. Overloaded EMS putting local citizens at risk because of delayed ambulance response times related to student alcohol poisonings, requiring all fire and police vehicles to frat areas on weekends.
Property damage, vandalism, alcohol poisonings, deaths and sexual assaults appear to be an expected form of behavior in today's fraternity system. What a shame.

Two college students found dead near UC Berkeley in separate incidents died after drinking alcohol, authorities said Friday.
Vaibhev Loomba, 20, of Lafayette was found unresponsive shortly after noon Nov. 9 at Zeta Psi fraternity at 2728 Bancroft Way. Loomba died of acute alcohol poisoning, the Alameda County coroner’s office said.
Loomba studied at UC Davis, according to his Facebook profile.
About 4 a.m. Dec. 20, UC Berkeley student Apoorve Agarwal, 20, of San Ramon was found dead outside his home on the 2500 block of Piedmont Avenue, apparently after falling down a flight of stairs.
The coroner said he suffered blunt force trauma. Police said alcohol may have been a factor in his death.
Agarwal was a junior studying applied mathematics and economics.

The young man who died Saturday in Berkeley’s Southside neighborhood was a 20-year-old junior from San Ramon who was pursuing a double major in applied mathematics and economics at UC Berkeley, according to biographical information posted online.
The Berkeley Police Department said officers found the young man’s body just after 4 a.m. Saturday in the 2500 block of Piedmont Avenue, between Dwight Way and Parker Street.
The Alameda County coroner’s office identified the man Monday as Apoorve Agarwal.
"At this time, it does not appear foul play was involved and alcohol may have been a factor," police said in a prepared statement Saturday.
According to scanner audio recordings reviewed by Berkeleyside, first responders were called to the scene for a report of an unresponsive man who had fallen down the stairs. Prior to their arrival, the man was not breathing, but CPR was performed by someone nearby.
Berkeley police and firefighters arrived within minutes and found Agarwal deceased just outside his home, authorities said.
Agarwal’s cause of death was listed by the coroner’s office as contrecoup contusions of the brain and blunt trauma to the head. An autopsy was performed Monday.

A 20-year-old man was found dead on the street in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Berkeley Police said they responded to a report of an unresponsive male in the 2500 block of Piedmont Avenue in Southside Berkeley at approximately 3:59 a.m. on Dec. 20.
Berkeley Police and Fire personnel arrived within minutes and discovered a 20-year-old male, deceased, just outside his residence.
BPD said it is investigating the case as a suspicious death, although it does not appear that foul play was involved. Alcohol may have been a factor, the police reported in a release issued at around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office took custody of the deceased.
Authorities are not releasing the identity of the dead man to ensure proper notification has been made to his family.
The 2500 block of Piedmont Avenue is in the heart of UC Berkeley’s fraternity and sorority residential area. It is not known whether the man who died was affiliated with either Cal or a fraternity.
A 20-year-old man was found dead last month at the Zeta Psi fraternity at 2728 Bancroft Ave., the day after the frat threw a large party that drew hundreds of attendees.
Berkeleyside will update this story when it tracks down further information.

Greed by California legislators caused the deaths of hundreds of
California minors. In the mid 80's California's Attorney General and
the State Supreme Court issued a ruling on liability of providing
alcohol to minors. National and State fraternities and the Liquor
industry cried about the loss of money and the "right to party" that
resulted from this decision. The lobbyists from these groups
entertained California's lawmakers and plied great sums of money to
their re-election campaigns. The results of all this money to our
legislators resulted in the writing of the "Social Host Ordinance."
This law basically prevented any fraternity from being sued by anyone
affected by underage drinking. This changed recently thanks to the
State Supreme Court's ruling overriding some of the "Social Host
protection." Now when minors are served alcohol at fraternities that
protection has now been eliminated.

Bogdanich said he makes a point to hear out opposition after a story, including any that comes from students and alumni who are defensive of their school. Unfortunately, sometimes those comments have been nasty and even turned threatening.
"Naturally when you report critically about how institutions respond improperly to these complaints, they’re going to howl bloody murder," he said. "They’re going to complain, and that’s not unexpected. They’re entitled to their opinion. But no one’s going to challenge the facts that we’ve reported on."
"SOCIAL HOST PROTECTION"
We have a vacation rental home. We have faith in our son, but he is just 21. Some of his friends are younger, and drinking is likely. What is the law if something happens involving alcohol there among his buddies?
— L.G., Rancho Palos Verdes
A: The California Supreme Court has weighed in on this issue in a case titled Ennabe v. Manosa. A young woman hosted a party at a residence owned by her parents without their consent. Alcohol was available. Some of the guests (most under 21) were charged an admission fee that went toward the cost of buying additional alcohol. One of the under-21 guests who paid an admission fee drank there, became intoxicated and subsequently killed someone in an automobile accident.
The court was tasked with deciding whether liability could arise involving private people as opposed to a business that dispenses alcohol. Business & Professions Code Section 25602.1 provides that a claim may be brought by anyone who suffers injury or death against any person licensed, or required to be licensed, or any other person who sells or furnishes alcoholic beverage to an obviously intoxicated minor, when doing so causes the harm.
While social hosts generally are not liable for injuries caused by intoxicated guests, there is an exception if alcohol is provided to a minor. In the Ennabe decision, the fact that an admission fee was charged was enough to constitute a "sale," and the phrase "any other person" in Section 25602.1 was deemed to include private people as well. Thus, while liability had not been determined in the Ennabe case, the court left open the possibility it could be.
Bottom line: I would not let any alcohol be available in that home under the circumstances you describe unless you can directly monitor and control what’s going on.

Princeton Has a Shadow Fraternity System Nobody Controls
By Natalie KitroeffDecember 04, 2014
Princeton is not the only institution that ignores frat behavior.
UC, UC BERKELEY AND THE CITY OF
New graduates walking with the processional into the chapel before their commencement in June at Princeton University
Clarifiesin fifth paragraph that only some clubs weren't accepting women when Sally Frank won the lawsuit.
When Princeton University officials learned that a student had mass-e-mailed a photo of a woman performing oral sex at one of its 11 eating clubs (social clubs that resemble fraternities), it quietly began investigating the matter. Despite the fact that passing around a photo of a sex act without the consent of those pictured is a crime in New Jersey, the university did not inform local police. The school’s squeamish approach to the incident raises questions about how it can discipline its students—and abide by stricter government guidelines for handling sexual assault—when so much social life at the institution lives outside campus confines.
On Oct. 12, Adam Krop, a vice president at the Tiger Inn, one of Princeton's oldest eating clubs, sent an e-mail to all members that included a "crude joke" and a description of an "Asian chick," along with the photo, according to the New York Times. "Our investigation began as soon as we received a report, just days after the alleged incident," says Martin Mbugua, a University spokesman. The Princeton Police Department only found out about the e-mail three weeks later, when an anonymous third party notified the police chief. Any misbehavior at the Tiger Inn, headquartered in a stately mansion on a street just off the main campus, technically falls under the jurisdiction of local police.
In November, the Department of Education found that Princeton botched its response to reports of sexual assault and the university formally agreed to tighten its handling of alleged sexual crimes.New guidelines implemented by the government require schools to investigate sexual violence reports that occur outside school grounds if the incident has "continuing effects on campus." While no violence was alleged in this case, the new statutes send the message that a school's responsibility for protecting students doesn't end when they step off the quad.
It would be hard to overstate the role of the eating clubs at Princeton, where bars and other opportunities for relaxing human interaction are scarce. The clubs, which were started by students in the mid-19th century after the school banned fraternities, are where junior and senior members are served meals and everyone else drinks heavily and dances toJourney on weekends. Club members, who in some cases have to be selected to join a club and in others can just sign up, elect a slate of officers who live in the houses and take formal charge of planning weekly debaucheries. (Fraternities and sororities exist but are practically a hobby, compared to the influence of eating clubs on the student body.)
Like fraternities, eating clubs have a history of being hostile to women. Some of Princeton's eating clubs did not accept women until Sally Frank, a Princeton alumna, successfully sued them for discrimination. Tiger Inn was the last to relent, which came only in 1991, after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear its appeal.
Krop, the senior who circulated the photo, and Andrew Hoffenberg, a club officer who sent a note the same evening encouraging fellow members to heckle Sally Frank, who gave a lecture at the University on Oct. 13, were forced out of their leadership roles last week by Tiger Inn’s governing board.
"Ever wonder who we have to thank (blame) for gender equality," read Hoffenberg’s e-mail, according to the Times. "Looking for someone to blame for the influx of girls? Come tomorrow and help boo Sally Frank."
The men have not been disciplined by the university and are not being investigated by the police. The Princeton police concede that the e-mail with the picture may have broken the law—"At the very minimum, it’s harassment," says Steve Riccitello, the department’s public information officer—but haven’t launched an investigation because the victim hasn’t come forward.
The Tiger Inn board surveyed members about the environment for women in the group, and it has vowed to tackle the club’s bro culture, in part by putting more women in positions of power.
"We are going to be working with the undergraduate membership on a
very complete and thorough set of changes," says Eric Pedersen, the
board’s chief financial officer. "There is a lot in press about
fraternities. We want to make sure we don’t go down that road."

|"Fraternity Culture Must Change" is a
common theme among many of those researching the topic of fraternity
behavior today. I fully agree with this assessment, but go a step
further: I believe we must also change the culture of those who allow
this behavior to continue. I refer to them as "enablers." They are
those employed—both individuals and organizations—to justly address
this behavior, but who tend to treat it with bias.
I have spent several hours' daily reading and researching articles pertaining to fraternity behavior in this country. I also receive and read letters and emails from families who have been affected by this behavior, and the topics mentioned in all are similar, which is that cities and universities often ignore their responsibilities by not enforcing the laws when dealing with fraternity behavior. The behavior that occurs at fraternity houses would not be allowed to continue, or sometimes even be condoned, if the police and city inspectors did their jobs. There is an inequity in the way those in fraternities are treated. If this behavior were spotted in other areas of town or in other parts of the bay area, police in riot gear would show up, and yet it is ignored around fraternities. Problems such as we have seen, will continue, or possibly even increase, if UC and the city allow the breeding grounds for this "Lord of the Flies" culture to develop and expand.
When it comes to maintaining respectable behavior from our fraternities, we seem to have many factors that contribute to the problem, not just that both the university and the city mostly ignore this area of town. Another part of the problem is that the IFC (inter-fraternity council) is responsible for fraternity behavior, which is like the fox watching the hen house. We also cannot forget to include the Alumni, who return far too often and instruct the next group of fraternity fledglings on how to party hearty. In addition, one would think the national chapters would want to make some improvements, if only due to concern over lawsuits, but knowing fraternity life they have decided, rather than change or improve behavior, they would spend millions on attorney fees for written contracts that "frat boys" must sign when joining. These contracts absolve the "nationals" of any legal responsibility, thus their need for policing their members’ actions, has now been removed. It would be similar to having a manufacturer such as Sony make a retailer like Best Buy sign a contract saying that even if they’ve made a faulty product they are not responsible for it, and any legal action has to be directed to the retailer. Every business in America would love this arrangement, yet that is how fraternities are set up. All of these factors add up to disaster when it comes to the present fraternity culture. Perhaps by first addressing the culture of the enablers, we will be able to change the culture of the fraternities.

Keep sordid, sexist fraternities out of our town
Fraternities have long been a blight on campuses across the US. Why on earth would we want them?
The Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) fraternity have plans to establish their own chapter here in St Andrews, to the dismay and joy of many. The fraternity’s motto (‘Gentlemen, Scholars, and Jolly Good Fellows’), whilst providing a wholesome, philanthropic image, is a mere guise for the scandalous exploits of its members. Its reputation for astonishingly elitist and sexist activities have made it world renowned and would spell bad news if it should establish itself here in the University.
Firstly, we must discuss the depraved drinking culture that a strong fraternity presence is likely to bring to the town. We already have awkward town and gown relationships after things like Raisin (an event rooted in tradition and spoiled by a few); wide-spread encouragement of frat-style behaviour is likely to be an embarrassment to the University, as well as a source of grief to locals. DKE initiations and hazings have led to legal action being taken by their university campuses and, in some cases, their home states. Amongst many such instances, in 1967 the fraternity brothers were subjected to "frat-branding", allegedly using a hot branding iron to brand their members with the letter ‘D’. And in 2008 the Berkeley chapter of the fraternity in the University of California were dechaptered for alcohol, hazing and fire safety misconduct. These instances are only some of the most high profile in history that steeped in controversy.
Why would anyone welcome an organisation that has become so synonymous with depraved hazing rituals? All it would do is reinforce the perception many already hold of St Andrews students being horrendously out of touch with the real world.
Beyond this, it is evident that St Andrews already has a problem with gender exclusive organisations (or societies so dominated by one sex that they may as well be). Fraternities just seem to be another extension of this trend, harmful for the University’s moves towards equality and away from a binary conception of gender.
Members of fraternities and other societies in existence that seem to have a similar format are quick to extol the virtues of their organisations. However, positive things like expansive networking circles and exclusive efforts towards philanthropy quickly translate into harms when they become the basis for discriminating membership, be that along lines of class, gender or religion.
As long as opportunities like this aren’t open to sororities, it will seem to reinforce the ‘old boys club’ mentality that we already have in abundance in the UK and the States. There is nothing new or even vaguely exciting about an organisation that seeks to re-impose outdated social norms.
As such, these antiquated ideas become dangerous and unacceptable when manifested in fraternity culture. In 2010, the DKE chapter at Yale University came under scrutiny when, as part of a pledge ritual, its members shouted highly sexist chants which included, "No means yes, yes means anal". For this, the chapter was suspended for five years as well as barred from carrying out activities and events on the Yale campus. An anomalous incident it may have been, but the fact that something as sexist as this could ever happen at a top rate university does not bode well should the fraternity successfully establish itself here.
Male-only and female-only societies simply exacerbate a perceived divide between men and women. Not only is this unhelpful in terms of general equality (we are in the midst of movements that seek to underline our similarities like #HeForShe) but it also fails to acknowledge a more modern nuanced understanding of gender.
Beyond that, gender exclusive societies equally appear to promote a kind of maleness or femaleness that is harmful to both the individual and society. By separating people according to gender we implicitly accept innate differences between the sexes, playing into a narrative where harmful stereotypes such as all women being gentle and elegant and enjoying promoting children’s charities are taken as fact.
At a time when both society and the University seem to want to actively break down these overused and boring stereotypes it seems backward for a fraternity to want to insert itself into our community. As a university with a strong elitist reputation, the introduction of a new, notorious fraternity would not help to dispel that. Frequently, societies such as these ferment an ego-stroking culture that often include members of a similar social sphere and stratum. It must be stressed that this is certainly not the official practice; and yet the majority who end up in these groups all manifest from a similar social category. These fraternities also have a lot to do with networking and it is often remarked that is it ‘who you know’ to apply for such fraternities and in being successful with your application. This rules out any sort of fair game or practice for applying, should you wish to. It can become a vicious circle in congratulating the social climbing skills of the members.
We already have a reputation for being posh and privileged. Case in point, our team that appeared on University Challenge has led to us being branded as "Rich, elite and Tory", for merely appearing in our much loved academic gowns. Nevertheless, we are trying to break from that stereotype as Jessica Steinberg’s article, ‘The "Hidden" St Andrews Student’, has proven. With the introduction of yet another elitist, gender-segregated society ( this fraternity, let’s not forget, has played host to no fewer than five US presidents, as well as countless notable businessmen and politicians), why would we want to alienate ourselves further from a public who already have a less than rosy image of us?
The introduction of a DKE chapter in St Andrews may well be, for some, a cause for celebration. However, in a university already battling with a reputation for elitism, the arrival of an institution that perpetuates the worst of US university culture would be a major step in the wrong direction. The DKE are not welcome here, let’s just hope they listen.
|WHY I’M NOT SATISFIED
WITH THE "SOME GOOD GUYS" ARGUMENT
October 18, 2014· by Michelle Endo · in college, opinion.
It’s been a rough year for college fraternities. At my own university, UC Berkeley, the last couple weeks have begun to expose what are undoubtedly justa tiny percentage of the many instances of sexual assault and sexual abuse that happen every weekend in fraternities across American universities. But I’m not here to talk about the numbers or the incidents. I knew this was happening all along, and I certainly spoke up. Yet everywhere I got the same reactionary responses:
"There are some good guys! If not, more good guys than bad ones!"
"But you can’t say that about them all!"
"Have you even talked to these dudes? Some of my best friends are in fraternities and they’re not like that all!"
"But there are so many other good things frats do!"
But before I can even get to addressing these ‘defenses’, I’m usually cut-off by apologists or reactionaries. It’s understandable–it’s hard to hear negative labels attached to your friends, your brothers, your boyfriend. But it’s not about them specifically. I’m sure your brother, son, BFFL is a great person for the most part but what matters to me and what matters to my argument is not really how great and philanthropic and sweet your boyfriend is. It’s the parts that still don’t add up–and why we must address those things.
I don’t want to bore you too quickly, but a background would be useful before I’m lampooned by the greek community and friends. I’m a senior at UC Berkeley. When I was looking around at colleges, I was a little bit skeptical, if not mostly clueless, about greek life. So I didn’t think I really wanted to be part of it–mostly because of its portrayal in pop-culture and the media. It just didn’t seem like the scene for a mixed-race girl with lots of attitude and progressive ideals, but when I moved to Berkeley I wanted to stay open-minded.
I went to my first frat party the day before classes started and I was swept up in the hype my floormates and peers built-up around them. There were cute boys, there was free alcohol, and it was dark and sweaty and loud. Though I started off a bit off-put by the chaotic nature of frats, I soon decided it was probably the best place to find a decent dance floor as an 18 year old in Berkeley.
I met my first partner at a frat, and it turns out, he himself was fraternity brother. He was sweet, shy, and very nonaggressive. We ended up breaking up a few months down the line for reasons totally unrelated to greek life. A bit later, I started dating another guy from my class the semester before. Not even a week into our courting, he was pledging a fraternity. We suffered together through that semester, with longs nights where I ended up holding his hair back over the toilet after hazing events. This was the norm. So normal that a few of my friends, who were also pledging fraternities, would compare the level of difficulty of each others’ pledge semesters. It wasn’t a question of if a fraternity hazed, it was how hard and what exactly did they make you do?
I stayed with the same partner off-and-on for most of my undergraduate years: from his pledge semester, to the time when he was elected president of the fraternity. I even participated in sorority recruitment at the beginning of my sophomore year, though I ended up dropping out on Bid Night. As a fairly social person, it seemed almost natural to gravitate towards greek life… but there was also a point where I could no longer excuse the behavior and the actions I saw. And I saw it all.
I’ll get to the arguments now.
"There are some good guys!"(or "They’re not all bad!")
YES. You are so right. There are indeed some good guys. In fact, there are some guys that I do truly love. My ex-partners, for example, are good guys. They bought me flowers. Celebrated my birthday at midnight. Wiped my tears. But they were not perfect guys. In fact, together they’re a pretty bad group on the scale of moral-rightness, for a few reasons.
The most vivid example comes to mind about a year and a half ago. My ex-partner was "Rush Chair" at the time. In "GDI" speak, this means he was in charge of recruiting new pledges, new bros. We were surfing a few silly and very problematic websites that ‘rank’ greek houses at each university, my ex-partner, his best friend/bro, and myself. I remember my ex-partner was pining over a comment about his house that said the brothers there were "creepy". He conceded that the comment was somewhat valid, but that his vision as Rush Chair would be to recruit guys that would make their house look ‘good’. I asked him why he thought his house was creepy, and he quickly listed off a few brothers. I asked him to elaborate. I thought these guys were his bros, his mentors, his gym buddies.
And then he recounted to me multiple incidents, in particular, about one member of the fraternity that "everybody" knows raped multiple women. He even used the word "rape". Apparently, there had been multiple incidents where this brother took girls that were "way too drunk", "blacked out" to his room. When other bros would ask what happened, he would say he "got some", or something along those lines. My ex clarified: "Well maybe some weren’t rape, but that one time definitely was…" the conversation went on in this matter while he and his friend exchanged awkward glances. He recounted one time in particular where a girl threw up on the "creepy" brother during sex. They said he deserved it. My ex and his friend had their hearts in the right places, but when I asked why no one did anything about it they just kept with the shifty glances. "It would be awkward" or "What could we really do?" or "He’s a cool guy anyway" or "He brings in good pledges."
So how far does there being some good guys go? Not far, when even the good guys put women and their party guests’ safety behind their reputation. Though, it’s not just my opinion. From a philosophical standpoint, the "some good guys" argument falls flat on its face. I’m a Hannah Arendt fan, and when I started to think about this ‘defense’ more, I noticed how applicable her arguments are in this case. Arendt, a survivor of the Holocaust writing during the trials of Adolf Eichmann, points to the "banality" of evil acts. This evil is not sinister or terrifying. It is following the status quo in light of clear injustice. It is carrying out the deeds for another. It can be as awfully cold as carrying out the bureaucratic wills of the Nazi Regime, but it is precisely the banality, the day-to-day, that characterizes evil.
To this day, my ex-partner has never said a word about the sexual assault happening.Though there seems to be some semblance of a genuine will to take action against sexual assault, at least according toUC Berkeley Inter-Fraternal Council back in August, the incidents continue to add up weekend after weekend. Yet in my personal experience living on "Frat Row," the dialogue I’ve heard amongst the greek community has hardly budged. In fact, the issues of consent and sexual assault have been treated more like topical jokes. Today, I saw the same "creepy" bro walk out of the door of his fraternity. Just minutes later as I continued to walk, I heard some other guys from different frats comment on the exposure the greek community has been getting with disdain: "Did you see all of the S^#% they’re saying about us in the Daily Cal?" The comment sections of our newspaper are even less convincing–Berkeley men and alumni joke about the victim’s personal lives, about their level of credibility, instead of taking responsibility for a collective problem as the UC Berkeley IFC promised.
I’ve brought this argument before my friends, peers, grasping for an answer. Why do we allow this to happen? But people give the same defense: "There are some good guys!" "I’ve never done that!" The excuses reek of the same moral fallacy as those made at Nuremburg. It’s the fault in each individual fraternity brother for not taking action. For creating an environment that allows this to happen, if not actively promoting it, allowing it and encouraging it to flourish.
And even if you are not compelled by the moral problems of sexual assault and complicity, then what about what fraternities force brothers to do to one another? To men to other men? Peer to peer? I’ve looked for all of the other things frats "do" for the world, as people often tell me. A last-minute philanthropy event to raise a few bucks for an obscure disease? Throwing your parents money at a cause for some PR? I do not find this impressive. From the words of the mouths of my friends in fraternities themselves, frat philanthropy is mostly "a joke"–buying a few tubs of ice cream and selling tickets to sororities in exchange for making each other look good.
What I have seen fraternities ‘do’ for each other is depressing. At a time when depression amongst young men is higher than ever, why do we permit the existence of institutions that verbally, physically, and even sexually abuse the young men of our generation by one another? The hazing itself is bad enough, but the toxic environment is equally harmful. As a neighbor of many fraternity houses, I see young men sent to the hospital nearly every weekend. Sometimes it’s related to hazing, and sometimes its just part of the culture of fraternities where drinking more makes you look cool, drinking more earns respect. Didn’t we learn we were above this in high school?
Undressing my ex-partner from his vomit-covered clothes before we were even "official" was humiliating to him. And the worst part was that he didn’t remember a single thing–he felt far from being cool. I see young men running past my house, belligerent, vomiting up alcohol all over themselves as they’re drilled by older brothers. Now is THAT cool? I’ve seen my classmates fail exams during "Hell Week" because they’re not allowed sleep for days at a time. The degrading environment frats create is often defended as being fun or as a bonding experience, but where do you draw the line when week after week young men across the country in fact die from hazing events?
Meanwhile, incidents of violence and frustration with the "bro" image of manliness contributes to countless suicides and acts of violence. These young men are in some of the most turbulent and confusing times of their lives, 18 year olds moving out of their parents home for the first time, facing challenging classes, balancing extracurriculars or work. Do we really think every act of violence, like a school shooting, or every cry for help, like overdosing on drugs or failing classes are committed by young men by mere coincidence?
And even then, if you insist on saying "some good guys", then please point me to a fraternity that does not haze. I have visited nearly all of the 35 fraternities that are part of the Inter-Fraternal Council at UC Berkeley, and countless ones that are also not recognized by the IFC, and have not encountered a single one that doesn’t haze. Perhaps they don’t haze as hard, perhaps the IFC doesn’t know, but for the most part I personally have not seen a single case where it does not exist at all and not one that does not force it’s members to drink at some point or another.
If fraternities truly want to become more aware about sexual assault (whatever being "aware" means) or to truly make their homes safer, then we need to move past this some good guy argument. We need to stop making excuses for complicity–it’s one thing to be a passive bystander, but it’s another to throw thousands of dollars into budget for exchanges with sororities, to monitor parties for a "girl to guy" ratio, to make purposefully predatory environments (dark, sweaty basement dance parties with themes aimed at getting women in the least amount of clothes). This is undeniably active collaboration at best on the behalf of every single member of the fraternities I’ve seen. "The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil," says Hannah Arendt… and I couldn’t agree more.

West Virginia University Suspends All Frats, Sororities After Incident
BY M. ALEX JOHNSON
All fraternities and sororities at West Virginia University were suspended Thursday after an 18-year-old freshman was found unconscious and not breathing inside a fraternity house, just a week after a different fraternity was suspended after 19 pledges got into a street brawl, university officials and police said.
Nolan Michael Burch, 18, of Buffalo, New York, was in critical condition in intensive care Thursday at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, police and a hospital spokesman said. Morgantown police said they were called to the Kappa Sigma house about midnight Wednesday and found a man performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Burch, who was lying on the floor. Burch wasn't breathing and had no pulse, police said.
University officials said in a joint statement with the college's Inter-Fraternity and Panhellenic councils that all Greek organizations affiliated with the university had been suspended after the "catastrophic medical emergency."
Last week, a separate fraternity, Sigma Chi, was suspended after 19 intoxicated pledges were arrested or cited for underage possession of alcohol in a street brawl at 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 6. Morgantown police said they responded to numerous calls of a disturbance to find the students "running and screaming, yelling and engaging in disorderly conduct." The students initially identified themselves as being members of a rival fraternity and could face charges of obstruction of justice for providing fictitious information, Morgantown police said.
Greek organizations at many U.S. colleges have come under scrutiny in the wake of several deaths and injuries of pledges in the past year:
"The action to halt fraternity and sorority activities while these matters are being reviewed is being done with the well-being and safety of our students in mind," said Corey Farris, West Virginia University's dean of students. "That is — and must always be — our foremost priority."

|Next week UC Regents will be meeting
to discuss many things.
One topic will be to discuss their obscene
plans to raise tuition.
I have received many emails from UC employees, with this statement as being the top subject. They have all stated the same thing about UC's vindictive ways. (It is also by coincidence the same for the GREEK SYSTEM). Many women who have come forward complaining about sexual assaults are constantly being harassed by the Greek system and this behavior is being ignored by UC and not by accident. They are tying to discourage women from coming forward.
UC's failure to properly address this issue is scandalous.
They want to deal with this issue, but not deal with the primary underling cause: Drinking at fraternities. As a one time fire and arson investigator, I was taught to always look for the common denominator. In the case of sexual assaults, Alcohol and fraternities ARE the common denominator. To try and address this problem without addressing frat behavior would be the same as a cancer doctor looking at and trying to solve the clues of blood cancer without learning and dealing with blood. IT CAN'T BE DONE.
|UC BERKELEY WAS VERY LUCKY LAST SUNDAY MORNING 11.9.2014. I HAVE JUST COMPLETED VIEWING VIDEO FROM THAT NIGHT. |Does UC and the Berkeley police
department truly have a desire to address Fraternity behavior in the
south campus area?
This past June, my cameras picked up a semi naked female running from the rear of the Zeta fraternity. I sent multiple letters to Janet Napolitano, UC Berkeley Student conduct and Berkeley Police department with High Def video. Janet's response was "This involves the Berkeley campus, take it up with them. At the same time, she was telling all, that UC will now change its ways and address sexual assaults differently. So, I contacted student conduct. Remember, I contacted everyone in the beginning of June.
UC Berkeley contacted me on August 19th, Stating that the Zeta frat was no longer associated with Berkeley, and nothing could be done. UC student conduct wanted names and addresses of the people involved. I responded that I had clear photos but no names or addresses. Again I was told nothing could be done. I was instructed to contact their national chapter, which I did. Never heard back. After several weeks and not hearing back from Berkeley Police. I contacted the Berkeley police chiefs office. There I talked with his secretary. She transferred me to voice mail. Again, after not getting a call back, I called again. I had to call the Police chiefs office 3 times before someone would return my call. I was then informed that Berkeley Police were unable to view my video because they did not have the technology to view a mp4 file. I also sent video to all concerned about the parties that the Zeta's were having. This was at the end of September.
Can you really trust these people even when someone dies, they fail to do their jobs..
If the City and UC truly wanted to change things, something would have been done earlier and one person would still be alive and several others might not have been sexually assaulted. I have video and emails to back up this statement.

|I can't help but think this behavior
would be treated differently if it were occurring in Janet's
neighborhood or Tom's neighborhood. Or even in other parts of the
city. I am sure many other cities and towns in America would not put
up with this type of behavior. But not in Berkeley, In Berkeley our
Mayor spent tax payers money for outside lawyers to ensure the
students have their own district. Even though the previous district
allowed everyone to vote. In a district with the student to long term
resident ratio of 14000 students to about 2000 long term resident.
They could have had a student district long ago, if students had only
voted. But since Cal students are more interested in drinking than
voting, plus the city gave them a council seat without ever having to
vote. Why get involved. This past election, with the new district,
including long term residents and over 14,000 student, the district
only registered 741 votes. Which brings me to the point. The city with
UC's help has a created a no man's land in the south campus area.
Requiring the Berkeley tax payer to support a baby sitting police squad to control this behavior. Behavior that has put the entire community at risk both for delayed EMS, fire and police response times (ABC 7 VIDEO) and the cost of increased insurance premiums and lets not forget if UC gets sued, the taxpayer pays again. Not to mention the personal injuries and suffering by victims and families.
My neighbors have complained to the city and UC for years about these problems. Some neighbors have 2 and 3 foot folders with all of the letters and documents they have sent and collected. I personally have enough data to surpass the library of congress. But UC and the City, along with local and national fraternal organizations, including the IFC, watched and ignored what was happening.
Which ultimately brings us back to where we are again. And again.
"A broken window left unattended signals that no one cares if windows are broken. It becomes an ongoing invitation to throw more stones at more windows, ultimately undermining the moral standards of the entire community."

"CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCT"
TRAGEDY THAT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED, IF ONLY.....
From the posts I have been reading in the DailyCal, and in student papers from universities across the country, the theme has become clear, knowing which posts were submitted by members of frats. The people in authority should note this, because it illustrates the difficulties you are going to face when trying to change this type of behavior, (male we are in charge and can do anything we want) attitude. That is why those in authority need to get ahead of this problem. Cal has lied and covered up these problems for years and found it easier to just ignore bad behavior and make up excuses, why nothing can be done. This is another lie. They have many ways to deal with these issues, successfully, but choose the ones that always fail. "Trying the same things over and over and expecting a different outcome" describes Berkeley and UC.

Is Homeland Security falsifying crime statistics for the Mexico border area?
SUZANNE EOVALDI — SEPTEMBER 6, 2012
Falsifying crime statistic data about border crime along the Texas Mexican border to grab 6 million grant dollars is being revealed by PF Media’s undercover camera investigations! When Homeland Security Chief Janet Napolitano’s good friend Lupe Trevino took over as sheriff in Hidalgo County, somehow the violent crime problem along the illegal alien pipeline into the U.S. improved dramatically. How could that have happened so suddenly? Apparently, PJ Media reporter Bryan Preston said, "The grants pressure local law enforcement to tell false crime stats and fake border crime figures." He is calling out local, state, and federal crime reporting agencies for faking crime reports that are giving local citizens a false sense of security! A crime analyst admits on hidden camera that "changing crime stats to make them look better" involves "fiddling with them." By reducing downward aggravated assault and robbery, "you can justify it both ways," says the analyst, who at one point is seen laughing about their illegal jiggering with the numbers!
|WHY WE SHOULD
NOT TRUST DATA THAT COMES OUT OF UC.
Napolitano accused of falsifying border security data by lawmakerMarch 16, 20125:15 PM MST
The chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Goverment Reform said on Friday that he's still waiting for Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano to respond to a disturbing accusation that she and her underlings at DHS released deceptive and inaccurate information about illegal aliens sneaking across borders into the United States.
Chairman Darrell Issa sent Napolitano a letteron March 1 saying it is investigating agency insiders’ tips that her department and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection "released false and misleading border crossing data."
"Without an accurate measurement of how many illegal entrants become ‘got-aways,’ there is no way to assess the safety and security of the southwest border," said the Napolitano letter.
"Got-aways" are border crossers who are not arrested or turned back when they enter the United States illegally, according to Issa.
The National Border Patrol Council also says the report is misleading and that the increase in drug seizures actually means the Mexican cartels are more active and smuggling more drugs into the U.S.
Apprehensions along U.S. borders were down more than 50 percent -- to about 350,000 -- since 2008. More than 87,000 of those apprehended had criminal histories. The decrease is due to a more secure border, which results in less people attempting to cross into the U.S. illegally, the Napolitano report said.
However, the NBPC claims the figures used by Napolitano and her staff are deceptive and can be attributed to more and more illegal aliens being successful at evading border agents. Also, there's a movement within the Customs and Border Protection directorate to create a "kinder, gentler" border patrol force.
"During mandatory Cultural and Environmental Awareness training that all Border Patrol agents must take, we learn that illegal aliens are now referred to as "cross-border violators". We further learn that we should carry lots of garbage bags and assist the "cross-border violators" in hauling out their trash and disposing of it properly," officials stated on the NBPC blog.
Union officials point to further evidence that Border Patrol field operations have been hijacked by politically correct bureaucrats and politicians in Washington, DC.
"We are glad to know that the huge army of Border Patrol staff officer bureaucrats in D.C. are busy finding new ways to try to lobotomize rank-and-file agents so they can be transformed into politically correct robots who are afraid to make a decision or aggressively enforce the laws of this country. After all, too many arrests of "cross-border violators" would not look good for another massive amnesty program," according to NBPC officials.
In his letter to Napolitano, Issa quotes Shawn Moran, a senior border patrol agent stationed in the San Diego sector and vice president of the National Border Patrol labor union, in his interview with CNSNews:

We are part of the problem, we will be part of the solution
BYJAMES STEWART | SPECIAL TO THE DAILY CAL
LAST UPDATED 16 HOURS AGO
As the vice president of external affairs for the Interfraternity Council, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the steps we are taking as an organization to address the growing issue of sexual assault on our campus. Unfortunately, this is an issue that has always been present in the UC Berkeley community, and it is equally unfortunate that the deplorable events of the past several weeks occurred before serious changes could be made on this campus. Nevertheless, I can confidently say that serious changes are on the way.
First, on behalf of every fraternity man on this campus, I would like to commend the victims of these assaults for speaking out. I can scarcely imagine the courage it takes to come forward after such a traumatic event, and as an organization, we will be committed to supporting survivors in any way we can. With this in mind, the IFC will remain committed to a zero-tolerance policy — we hold ourselves to a high standard, and anyone found guilty of sexual violence has no place in our community. That being said, it is crucial to maintain confidentiality during the legal process. Eugene Quillin’s recentexoneration reminds us of the damaging effects a high-profile trial process can have on someone’s life. Again, I cannot stress enough that the IFC encourages victims to exercise their right to report, and I am in no way blaming the victim for coming forward. I am, however, calling on the media and Berkeley Police Department to exercise greater discretion during the trial period given the serious nature of these allegations. It isn’t fair to victims seeking justice, and it isn’t fair to our colleagues to turn the legal process into a proverbial witch hunt.
In addition to supporting survivors, our organization has unanimously passed two constitutional amendments to educate members about new consent laws and to train them in active bystander intervention. In nearly every instance of sexual assault, people saw the perpetrator interact with the victim and did not intervene either because they didn’t know what to look for or how to act. In order to ensure that our members have this crucial information, every IFC-affiliated chapter will be required to participate in consent and active bystander training every semester. This new training is in addition to the newly expanded educational programming our members receive from the LEAD Center and the university. We have also created a new health and safety position dedicated to providing educational opportunities for the entire campus throughout the term. Given a greater knowledge of the topic, our members and other students will be able to identify and act in these situations to prevent violence in the future.
As this issue is not limited to the fraternity community on our campus, we have been working with a variety of organizations to ensure that the IFC is a part of a larger effort to halt sexual violence on campus. While drafting the above-mentioned changes, chapter presidents and IFC executive members invited representatives from Greeks Against Sexual Assault, Panhellenic Council, the ASUC Senate, the Gender Equity Resource center, the Multicultural Greek Council and the National Panhellenic Council to give their input and raise potential concerns. Outside student organizations, our efforts to increase education have received support from administrators within the university, including President Napolitano and Dean Greenwell. As a part of our ongoing effort to improve the safety of our community, CalGreeks will be hosting a forum on sexual assault Nov. 18. This event will place a number of administrators from the university, student leaders and fraternity and sorority national consultants into a discussion setting where we will pursue new methods to make our community increasingly safe for everyone. By pursuing an active dialogue with these partners, we hope to ensure that our solutions are derived from community feedback to tackle this community problem.
Like every other student on this campus, our members are outraged by each report of sexual violence, fraternity related or not. Our system is part of the problem, and the continuation of these assaults is evidence that we have not done enough in the past to prevent them from happening. Having said that, we are now pursuing rigorous education requirements in order to change that culture. We are providing every fraternity man on this campus with the most comprehensive education available in order to stop these heinous acts. We look forward to partnering with The Daily Californian, CalTV and other organizations to help us spread additional education about these issues throughout the community. While we are in the process of implementing these reforms, we ask for your continued support as fellow students. If you are interested in have any questions about these changes or about the Greek community in general, please feel free to contact me firstname.lastname@example.org.

Your recent news release of your plans to raise tuition 5% each year over the next five years, indicates to me your inability to do your job properly. With inflation running at less than 2% annually in this country, how can you, in good consciousness, raise tuition 5%? You state that all of your administrators need raises. Yet, UC has one of the highest sexual assault problems in the country and is currently being investigated by the federal government for lying and covering up crime on and near your campuses. UC also has the highest ratio of managers to people who actually contribute to UC's success. Your administration has been singled out as inept at dealing with multiple problems at once. But instead of addressing these problems and making UC's campuses safe for its students, you have decided to raise tuition and reward incompetence. I personally believe that your continued thinking along these lines has and will continue to contribute to the great decline in overall quality at UC, that same decline we are now experiencing here at Cal today. It is time you really learn about UC's history and return to those goals, instead of trying to find high paying jobs for UC graduates who are unable to find management jobs in the real world. UC is not a welfare state for the oversupply of managers. Moreover, at no time should the ratio of managers to support staff be as high as 1.87 to 1. You can save money and avoid an increase in tuition if you would do your job and eliminate the fat, just like a real manager in the real world, not a career politician that is used to talking, but not doing.
And quit crying to the governor. I am beginning to think he too is getting tired of UC mismanaging money and then crying to the state for more. I have posted repeatedly of these transgressions, such as selling a million dollar artwork for 128 dollars and taking money from the Department of Justice in 2007 for sexual assault improvements, but actually spending it on something else. Let's not even get into the stadium and high performance gym and its 1.2 billion dollar total cost. Remember there is interest for more than 50 years on the funds borrowed and Cal still owes you 32 million it borrowed from your special account to get the stadium started.Let's also not forget that you built this billion dollar elephant on the most dangerous fault in California and you are self-insured. Great decision-making. Which brings me to this point: you cannot pay someone a ridiculous salary and assume you will get top performance. You and many others are good examples of this fallacy. So stop running around whining, and do what you were hired to do: MANAGE.

Party Scene:As freshmen it is hard to find many people with apartments for parties so we mostly stay on campus and head up to the frats on Friday and Saturday nights. The parties are always fun but a lot of times you need to know a brother to get in. Saturday tailgates before football games are also extremely fun.

Party Scene:You can always find some sort of party going on in frat row. You have to have a good amount of girls with you if you're a guy, else you probably won't be able to get into the parties.
Party Scene:If you like frat parties, there's usually a lot of that. Clubbing is best in the city. Not a whole lot of bars but there are a few gems like Thalassa.
Party Scene:Well there are a variety of things you can do depending on the people and what hey prefer. I've been to frat parties which are fun at the beginning of your college stay and then you grow out of it. Going out to bars is fun but not for an every weekend thing and usually bars are too far to be walking there if we stay out late. Underage nightlife can be in frat parties, coop parties, friends houses.
Party Scene:Parties every weekend at the frats, and the bars are always bustling.
Party Scene:I don't usually go out, but sororities and fraternities have a fairly large presence on campus
Party Scene:The frats dominate most of the night life on campus
Party Scene:Bars are good and for people underage, fraternities are great.
Party Scene:There are frat rows and parties. If you're a party type, you will find your group.
Party Scene:Good parties at houses, frats, cooperative houses, etc. but for good bars you have to get all the way to San Francisco.
Party Scene:There are quite a few fraternities to visit and party. However, the cleanliness and safety of them are said to be poor.
Party Scene:At Berkeley, students party as much as they study.
Party Scene:If frat parties and co-op parties are what you're looking for, then you'll have a good time as long as you've got the right connections.
Party Scene:Cal's frat row is like a scene out of a movie. Around 10:30 on Friday and Saturday nights, the sidewalks of Piedmont are bustling with girls in skimpy dresses and boys wearing too much cologne. The frat parties are a really great place to meet people and network. If you're 21 and older, Pappy's on Telegraph and Kip's on Durant are awesome places to hang out.
Party Scene:Frat houses are a good bet on Fridays/Saturdays, although it gets a bit old past freshman year. Co-ops are good for you hipsters who like to drink from old jars. Easy to walk to places and back home, or take the 51b back. Cons: could be more bars in the area; some of them are pretty spread out in the downtown area. Parties get rolled a lot, although cops are pretty nice. Your worth at your party is determined by your beer pong skills, so practice that shot.
Party Scene:If you're under 21 you'll mostly be at frat parties and house parties, which aren't always great, especially the frats.

"Even now as co-chair of Greeks Against Sexual Assault, it's so hard to get the frats to work with me or the sororities to stop victim-blaming and slut-shaming. Even if a sorority lets me come in and talk to them about consent, there will still be a group of people who victim-blame and slut-shame, and just don't understand."
Taylor**, another UC Berkeley student, also says she experienced sexual assault at the hands of the Greek community, as well as the inaction of fellow sorority sisters. She was at an event where she and her pledge sisters were alcohol-hazed, and a brother from a fraternity forced her to consume a large amount of alcohol. He then lured her out of the house by promising to take her out to get food. Instead he took her to his apartment, where she says he sexually assaulted her.

I could not agree more. I've been seeing so many of these reports and yet nothing is being done to stop these frats. Instead, all I see are people victim blaming. Disgusting.
Yes. Agreed. For all the admin's talk about strict sexual misconduct policies, these things keep happening. It sounds like it is a systemic issue related to the fraternity culture. These stories were picked up on Jezebel the other day and they'll start to get wider national attention. Unfortunately, that might be what it takes to get the admin to start thinking more seriously about placing serious limits on fraternity life.
And yes, the comments from my fellow male travelers has been sickening. Women don't come forward to say these things when nothing wrong happened. All you apologists should stop being so defensive and accept that there are problems within the fraternity culture if this is happening so often. A charge of sexual misconduct should result in the closing of the fraternity - or temporarily withdraw its university recognition - until the case has been legislated; and if the member is found guilty, the fraternity should be closed indefinitely.

sorority sister told Kass she had been raped by the same man.
After Kass filed a complaint with Berkeley administrators, they convened a three-member panel that found her assailant was not responsible for the rape. Her assailant and his fraternity later settled a civil lawsuit she had filed.
"I felt betrayed by the system," Kass said in an interview from Indiana, where she is a law student. "The fact that the university I loved seemed to not care about me and was willing to find in his favor so they wouldn't have to report a rape on campus … it was incredibly heartbreaking."

While universities are required by federal law to publicly report certain incidents of crime, including rape, those reports are often inaccurate and never detailed."|

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners ranked fraternities as the sixth worst insurance risk in this country, just behind hazardous waste disposal companies and asbestos contractors. Dear Berkeley women: It’s time to lead the next revolution
BYELLEN HARING | SPECIAL TO THE DAILY CAL
LAST UPDATED AUGUST 25, 2014
This past spring, my youngest son finished his freshman year at Berkeley. Toward the end of the semester, he asked me to proofread his final anthropology paper. The professor had assigned a paper that required the students to conduct a mini ethnographic study of some aspect of college life. My son chose to examine fraternity parties. Despite my strong objections, he had pledged a fraternity during his second semester. As an insider, he was perfectly positioned to make observations and ask questions about fraternity life. As I was reading his paper, I became more and more outraged by and frustrated with what he had written, and I wasn’t sure what to do about it. The fact that it was written in a "matter-of-fact" voice made it all the more shocking. Here is an excerpt that particularly disturbed me: "The first priority in planning a party is determining the theme of the party. When choosing the party theme, members of the fraternity often opt for a theme that will encourage sexual promiscuity. For example, a fraternity will choose a theme that forces women to dress promiscuously. In one instance I witnessed the theme, ‘Hunt or Be Hunted,’ in which men dressed as hunters and women dressed as animals to be hunted. "Later in the paper, he described the "bidding" process, which is the vernacular for selecting the sororities that would be honored with invitations to their parties. He wrote, "When I asked another brother how the fraternity decides which sororities to give these bids to he simply responded, ‘The most rich, white, and attractive’." This was particularly surprising and disturbing. The demographics at Berkeley reveal that about 40% of the student body is Asian, while only about 29% is white. I unfortunately wasn’t surprised that looks were part of the equation. My son observed that "the bid system allows the frats to objectify women and make judgments based solely on the beauty of the women. This has two effects; it leads many in the fraternities to look at sororities simply as a supply of attractive women. It also forces women into a gendered role, which is primarily supplying entertainment for male fraternity members. One woman that is a member of a sorority told me that when her sorority is invited to a fraternity she feels pressured to be sexually promiscuous so that her sorority would continue to receive bids." "Running security," also referred to as "working the door," requires "maintaining the ratio" — ensuring that there are always two women to every man at the party. My son writes that this "allows the males to pick and choose females for their personal sexual interests." He noted, "I personally witnessed a fraternity member deny a group of girls from entry into his house’s party because the girls ‘were not attractive enough.’ My son is a thoughtful and intelligent young man. He joined his fraternity because his friends had joined the fraternity. He made many good friends and worked on charitable projects with this fraternity. He has never been physically hazed. Furthermore, he tells me the examples in his paper are a composite of what he has seen, and they did not all occur at any one fraternity. In fact, in his paper he wrote, "This does not necessarily mean that the fraternity members personally wish to encourage this promiscuous behavior, but rather, as I was told by the social chair of a fraternity, ‘The theme of a party is selected in order to cater to the audience, rather than cater to the fraternity.’" When my son chose Berkeley, he thought he was selecting a liberal, cutting-edge, West Coast school that would be totally different from his East Coast home-state options. Berkeley, after all, is well known for being a place where social movements begin. He unfortunately found that not only is Berkeley not leading the charge in social change but that it has, at least where women are concerned, fallen into the age-old social stereotyping and devaluation of women. I have to wonder why young college women anywhere subject themselves to this kind of objectification, but I am particularly surprised by the women of Berkeley. Why would super smart women voluntarily subject themselves to visual inspections at the doors of fraternities just to get into a party where they outnumber men two to one? My son doesn’t think he can have much impact on this system, and he’s probably right — but young college women certainly have it within their collective power to change it. Here’s what Berkeley women need to do: Step 1: Stage a long term boycott by: 1) never accepting "bids" to fraternity parties, 2) never attending a party that maintains a two-to-one, female-to-male ratio, 3) never attending a sexually themed party and 4) never attending a fraternity party that conducts a door inspection. Step 2: Spread your social movement to other campuses by: 1) reaching out to other sororities and enlisting their participation in your boycott and 2) reaching out to women on all college campuses and inviting them to join your revolution. Step 3: Lead by setting the example and broadcasting your efforts and the results of your efforts far and wide! Women in the U.S. today earn about 57% of all undergraduate degrees. The women of Berkeley have it within their collective power to change a social custom that is bad both for women and for men. It’s time for this generation of Berkeley students to do what Berkeley is known for: leading social change. Step up, Berkeley!

UC Berkeley Facebook Page Reconnects Drunk Fornicators, Is Hilarious
A Facebook page has been created for the students of UC Berkeley to assist them in reconnecting with their drunken, otherwise unidentifiable one-night-stand hookups. The page, named , is quickly gaining popularity at over 1,800 “likes,” and I’m going to credit the candid, funny, and often graphic nature of the posts as the reason why. I’ll provide examples later, but the page’s dedication to anonymity makes this place a magnificent, borderline pornographic free-for-all.
UC Berkeley Hook-Ups explains:
This page is specifically designed to help the fellow drunk locate his/her Berk town hookup. If you recognize you or your story post message me with your number. We will keep everything anonymous until we find a match [sic].
Now, from my observations and research (about five minutes of scanning through posts), the page serves a couple purposes: the first is, as described by the page’s moderator(s), to reestablish communication between those previously engaged in casual encounters, and the other is a message board roast. Some Cal students are getting destroyed in there, but then again, that’s what makes this so funny.
Here are some examples:
#20 Dear DKE boy,
“I felt like your jagged nails were going to ruin by precious puss you petite prick!”… That’s gonna leave a mark. You short, pervy, finger-blasting DKE boy.
And then some cocaine-dick action from a Norwegian named Line.
#21 To the Norwegian chick i met at FIJI, doing blow off each other was great….especially when you did it off my dick with your mouth following by giving me the best head Ive had in past weekends. I think your name was Line.
Then we have this nerdy Asian gamer who turns into a stallion in the sheets.
#2 Last weekend I met some nerdy Asian freshman kid who liked videogames at a wild party. I was so wasted (im a girl btw) that I decided to give him a chance. We talked for a while and I humored him with some videogame discussion, he told me he liked some game called dodo 2. I was so drunk I told him I’d even roleplay his favorite character LOL. we went back to his room and he plowed me while calling me shit like ice maiden or something. anyway he was actually an epic fuck. if you hmu sometime soon we’ll get more into it next time ;}
And finally, we’ll close with a story that begins with your standard tit-for-cig transaction, then develops into fornication in front of sleeping roommates, but amazingly ends with a facial by the guy who takes his cigarette game very, very seriously.
#22 So I met this girl outside SAE last weekend. Presumable pretty drunk this bitch asks me for a cig, and being the quick thinker I am I ask her to show me her tits in exchange for a cigarette. She says she has to take me to her room to show me. So she does, and then seeing the invested interest I had she asks if i want to feel them. She gets me inside to a secluded location, and by secluded I mean her, her sleeping roommate and her roommates boyfriend. At any second I figure they may wake up, so while Im trying to enjoy getting my rock hard schlong serviced I begin thinking of a master plan to save all of my cigs and exit the room successfully. When the time was right I covered this chick face like liberals cover Berkeley! The deed was done and with no one awoken and all my cigarettes safely in hand. If you’re out there, please respond I am very interested in meeting your sleeping roomie☺

LAST FRIDAY THE APPELLATE COURT DENIED THE FRATS THE WRIT THAT WAS FILED ON THEIR BEHALF BY THE DEFENSE TO, SIDETRACK, ONCE AGAIN, OUR LAWSUIT. NOW THAT THE RULING WAS IN OUR FAVOR, AGAIN, WE CAN NOW PROCEED TO DISCOVERY AND A JURY TRIAL, WHICH WAS ALL THAT WE WANTED. A CHANCE TO SHOW THE PUBLIC AND THE JURY, WHAT WAS AND STILL IS OCCURRING IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD, BUT WAS IGNORED BY ALL WHO WAS IN AUTHORITY TO CHANGE THIS BEHAVIOR. WE HAD OFFERED TO SIT DOWN AND DISCUSS THE PROBLEMS IN THE SOUTH CAMPUS AREA AND WORK OUT A MUTUALLY AGREEABLE SOLUTION BEFORE THE LAWSUIT WAS FILED. WHEN THE REPS FOR THE FRATS TOLD US TO "GO TO HELL", WE DECIDED TO FILE SUIT, BUT NOT FOR MONEY, BUT TO FORCE CHANGE. THE REPS FOR THE FRATS LAUGHED AT US AND SAID WE WERE ATTEMPTING "SOCIAL CHANGE" AND IN AMERICA, THAT WOULD NOT FLY. WE WERE ALSO TOLD BY THE COURT "THAT THE COURTS WERE NOT THERE TO ENFORCE THE LAWS THAT WERE ALREADY ON THE BOOKS, BUT NOT ENFORCED, BUT TO ISSUE MONETARY DAMAGES." SO OUR LAWSUIT WAS AMENDED TO NOW INCLUDE MONEY. FOR THIS REASON, DISCOVERY, MANY OF MY LINKS AND VIDEOS HAVE BEEN TEMPORARILY DISABLED.|
